Sewing isn’t just about stitching fabric together; fabric must also be neatly cut. Precise cutting and clean edges depends heavily on the quality of your fabric cutting tools.
If you don’t have a good pair of sewing scissors, buy them. On average, they range from $20 – $30 and are well worth the investment. You can easily find them at Walmart or any craft store such as Joann’s or Hancock’s.
What many beginner crafters don’t realize just how important it is to have a sharp pair of scissors dedicated only to cutting fabric. Scissors are a common household object, but I definitely recommend going out and investing a sturdy pair of fabric scissors. Scissors designed for cutting paper are not the same as scissors made for cutting fabric. Paper scissors are not as sharp; while they can cut through fabric, the resulting edges are not clean and only one layer can be cut at a time.
When I first began sewing, I used kitchen scissors and my finished products just weren’t as nice. Most of the time I felt like I was violently chewing at the fabric instead of cutting it. Trust me, it’s not a pleasant feeling.
Once you get a pair of scissors, make sure not to use it for anything else other than cutting fabric. Otherwise, you might dull the blade.
These cutters are much like pizza cutters and are extremely convenient. By simply pressing down on the fabric, a nice, clean edge is made. They are not absolutely necessary but they are useful!
Rather than continually having to press the scissors, you can just swipe the cutter across the edge of the fabric. I find that they don’t cut multiple layers as well as fabric scissors do. Additionally, it’s important to use these cutters on a very firm surface, and the blades must be continually changed out.
On average, they cost from $10 – $30 and can be found at Walmart or any craft store such as Joann’s or Hancock’s. However, it is much more important that you first purchase a good pair of fabric scissors!
