The price and complexity of sewing machines can be intimidating for the beginner crafter, but they are absolute game changer when it comes to sewing.
When I first began sewing, I didn’t have a sewing machine; everything I made was by hand. I would watch online tutorials that would require a machine, and I would feel so disappointed because there was no way for me to try and make them. However, I was reluctant to purchase a machine because it seemed both pricey and complicated to use.
For anyone who is serious about sewing, I think a sewing machine is essential. When I finally bought a sewing machine two years after I started sewing as a hobby, I felt like there were so many more projects for me to experiment with. It was an investment, but it was probably one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I think the greatest benefit is that a machine significantly cuts down sewing time.
When buying a machine, I would suggest buying a nice, basic model first if you don’t want to spend so much. I bought this machine here from Amazon. It does a good job sewing a basic straight stitch and zigzag stitch, but I wouldn’t recommend it for projects that require heavy materials or many layers. However, having a machine that can sew a straight stitch is already incredibly helpful. It just makes things so much faster!
Once you find a machine, it’s important to read the instructions manual and learn about how your machine works. Each machine is different, and improper use can lead to numerous problems and headaches. Once you learn how to use a machine though, it will become an essential sewing tool.
But hey, if you don’t have a machine it doesn’t mean you can’t sew! Here are some projects that can easily be made by hand 🙂
